Educated at Cumnor House and Millfield, he began playing for Harlequins in 2005, making over 300 appearances and earning Premiership Player of the Year in 2009 and 2012. He captained England from 2012 to 2015, earning 66 caps between 2009 and 2018 and leading the national team through key tournaments including the 2015 Rugby World Cup.
